BioWare has lifted the nondisclosure agreement from the SWTOR beta. Which means I can now say that I’ve been face down in Star Wars for the past few weeks.
I don’t know how successful SWTOR will be. I’m fairly sure that I look for different things in an MMO than the average player. Lots of people seemed concerned by the current pvp system, but I don’t really care that much for pvp. And unfortunately I haven’t gotten to max level yet, so I can’t comment on end game content.
I can say that so far the story line is solid, and truly compelling at moments. The decision to have separate stories for each class is nice, as well. And, of course, it’s always fun to stroll through fictional areas that we’ve grown to love, like Coruscant, Tatooine, Alderaan, and the list goes on (and on).
I’m still not sure on the decision to eliminate auto attacks. Combat is more engaging, but it’s also a complete spam fest, all the time. If you aren’t pushing a button on the global cooldown, well, you aren’t doing anything. Literally. You get used to it, but it was jarring at first, and still a little awkward.
All in all, SWTOR is a good game. If you like MMO’s, Star Wars, or, most of all, BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic, then give it a shot. As for me, I’m not sure I’m willing to dish out $50 or so plus another $15/month. But I’m not not sure either.
